Il Pixel Rosso is the combined creative forces of Silvia Mercuriali, artist and devisor from internationally renowned theatre company Rotozaza who pioneered the ‘Autoteatro’ style of performancs and Simon Wilkinson multi-award winning artist and film maker.
The ‘Autoteatro’ series explores a new kind of performance, whereby audience members perform the piece themselves, for each other. Using simple technology, participants are given instructions – often via headphones – about what to say and do. There is no actual ‘audience’ beyond the other participants.
The first show And the Birds fell from the Sky now exists in English, Dutch, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese and Welsh. It has toured Europe and Australia with great responses from Audience members, reviewers and venues alike.
Anarchic, dreamy and dangerous, ‘And The Birds Fell From the Sky’ takes you on a joyride from inside your head all the way to the edge of civilisation, accompanied by three Faruk Clowns.
‘An otherworldly oddity…this unusual and profoundly personal roller-coaster is highly recommended’ The Age ****
In 2012/13 I worked with Il Pixel Rosso to produce their current international tour of And the Birds Fell from the Sky (Brisbane Powerhouse World Theatre Festival, Arts House Melbourne (Australia) Intrepid Theatre (Canada) and new commission The Great Spavaldos, which premiered at the Roundhouse, London as part of CircusFest 2012.
From New York to Bombay, from Paris to Abyssinia, the Spavaldo brothers performed their flying trapeze daredevil stunts without a safety net for over a quarter of century before their mysterious disappearance. Now they are back to tell their story and dare audience members to join them inside the big top, high up on the flying platform.
The Great Spavaldos is an immersive and multi-sensory theatrical experience for two people at a time. Fitted with video goggles and headphones audiences are given choreographed instructions to take on the central role of a circus performer.
“Dizzying and hilarious… a brilliant immersive performance” Independent ****
